It would be a safe bet to assume that your child would choose “the end” as the worst part of summer. Most parents, however, would probably pick peak summer heat in July & August. Skyhawks’ bread & butter is summer-season camps, we build hot days into our coach’s training and program curriculum from the get-go.
On overly hot days, Skyhawks coaches and directors are trained to increase the number of water and shade breaks during the summer. We try to avoid canceling or relocating camps, but in the event of extreme heatwaves, we will do so. If this happens, you’ll be contacted by a Skyhawks representative prior to the start of camp for the day and let you know.
Even if we’re not looking at record-breaking heat, here’s a few tips to make you child going during summer programs:
- Make sure your kids are drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to camp.
- Send a LOT of water with them to camp. Seriously, a LOT.
- Make sure they are wearing light, loose clothing that breathes. Be sure to add a hat to protect their head and face!
- Put sunscreen on before camp and send it with them so the coach can remind them to reapply throughout the day.
- Encourage your children to speak up if they feel thirsty or overheated during camp. Some kids get nervous or feel like they can't tell the coach they need to take a break. If you are worried your child won't say anything, let the coach know when you get to camp so they can check in with your child more frequently throughout the day.
- After camp, help cool your child down by having them rest out of the sun, preferably somewhere with air conditioning. You might treat them to a popsicle or cold treat, and make sure they are still drinking fluids to stay hydrated.
